Who is the course aimed at?
This course is aimed at carers or domestic staff
COVID-19
Please ensure that all Learners attending training at our venue(s) are aware of the following:
- All learners must verbally confirm they have no symptoms of COVID-19 . Should a learner exhibit symptom(s) of COVID-19, or confirm they have symptoms but have not tested, then Shropshire Partners in Care will provide a test kit at no cost to the learner’s employer to be carried out before entrance to the building is confirmed. If a learner has symptoms but can provide evidence of a negative test taken on the morning of the course, this will be sufficient to allow entrance.
What does the course cover?
Theory
• Provide a definition of moving and handling
• Review back pain and back related injuries in the UK
• Provide examples of behaviours that damage the back
• Identify and demonstrate understanding of the manual handling and equipment regulations under the Health and safety at Work Act
• Review legislation that protects an individual’s rights and wellbeing
• Utilise the risk assessment TILE(O) to identify hazards and reduce risk
• Demonstrate the efficient movement principles
• Demonstrate safe handling principles when moving loads
Practical one – Support for people with reduced mobility
• Chair Support - Assisting a person to sit comfortably in a chair
• Chair Support - Supporting an unsteady person to stand and sit down
• Ambulatory Support – Supporting an unsteady person to walk
• Equipment – Supporting a person to stand through use of equipment
• Falls – Discussion and advice on supporting a person who has fallen
Practical two – Support for people with low mobility
• Bed techniques – Assisting a person in and out of bed / positioning in bed
• Bed management systems – Assisting a person to reposition using slide sheets / management systems
• Hoisting – Fitting and removing slings correctly in bed and chair
• Hoisting – Transferring from chair to bed; Bed to chair using hoists
• Hoisting – Hoisting from floor (where applicable)
Each session is applicable to the following workers as follows:
Theory Session (mandatory)– For all workers, teaching safe practices for moving objects not people handlers
Practical One – For workers who may be required to lightly assist people to mobilise using hand techniques or light mobility aids such as frame, wheelchair pushing or rails (hand techniques include supporting a person to stand, sit, walk and helping the fallen person), other aspects may be included such as supporting people with steps
Practical Two – For workers who support people with limited mobility, including the use of equipment (hoisting, side sheets, stand aids and bed techniques), other aspects may be included such as bed management systems
